Applaud this Apple Dessert

Apple Cream Bars

    Bar cookies are so easy to make in a small oven. Simply cut them in squares and serve as is or topped with ice cream, whipped cream or yogurt. (I like oatmeal bar cookies and vanilla yogurt for breakfast.)
     These apple-tite pleasing bars are moist and flavorful, an ideal encore to a meal of grilled chicken or ham steak.  Your shortcut ingredients are a box of cake mix and a can of apple pie filling.


1 box of vanilla cake mix
1 stick of butter
1 can of apple pie filling
1 egg
8-ounce carton of sour cream (1 cup)
1 tablespoon white or brown sugar
    Cut softened butter into the cake mix until crumbly and press into a 9 X 13-inch baking pan.  Bake 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Top with apple pie filling. Whisk egg, sour cream and sugar and drizzle over the apples. Bake another 20-25 minutes. Cool and cut. Makes 12 pieces.
    Cook’s note: 2 to 3 cups of thinly sliced fresh apples can be used. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar to taste before adding sour cream topping.
